This month, the urgent and compelling new work Figures in Extinction seeks to unpack humanity’s destructive impact on the natural world at Aviva Studios, home of Factory International, presented in partnership with Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) and Complicité.

Directed by Simon McBurney alongside acclaimed choreographer Crystal Pite, Figures in Extinction brings the culmination of their ‘astonishingly imaginative’ (Telegraph) award-winning dance trilogy to Manchester, in a production which explores the ‘age of disconnection’ and our collective role in the ongoing collapse of our planet, and how we can unite to restore a livable world and build a sustainable future for all.

The production’s run is book-ended by a pair of exclusive talks from the creatives behind the work. On Wed 19 Feb, acclaimed author Anita Sethi leads a pre-show discussion with Crystal Pite and Simon McBurney which delves into the complex, multi-faceted development of the show, before NDT1 dancer Barry Gans joins Pite on Sat 22 Feb to expound on their use of movement as an artform to address the issues of our time, as well as their experience of bringing the critical story to Manchester for the first time.

Devised over four years, Figures in Extinction draws on myriad cultural and natural influences to issue a profound and timely call-to-arms for the salvation of our environment, from the Lasqueti Island community website to the Yangtze giant softshell turtle. The team has collated an expansive list of literature, poetry, songs and film which inspired the production, which you can check out HERE.
