Undeterred by 2020’s pandemic chaos, Celebrating Syria 2020 is heading online for its fourth annual festival, allowing viewers across the globe to tune into a range of free digital events working with the very pertinent theme of ‘alone together.’ This yearly showcase is Europe’s largest arts and cultural event devised by the Manchester-based charity Rethink Rebuild Society, and aims to shine a spotlight on the richness and diversity of Syrian culture and way of life – a topic which often goes unseen within mainstream media outlets.

Due to take place from Saturday 5 to Friday 11 December 2020, this year’s festival boasts a range of events which can be viewed for free, regardless of your location, bringing attendees face to face with a diverse range of Syrian musicians, artists, comedians and performers. Among the many diverse events to look out for this year is an evening of music from the London-based Kiwan Family, who invite us into their living room for a rousing rendition of some traditional Syrian and Levantine songs to kick start the festival on December 5. Other events worth catching include the art exhibition Cartooning Syria which runs throughout the festival, and a screening of the powerful documentary We Are Not Princesses followed by a live discussion with its director Itab Azzam on Tuesday 8 December.
