The Royal Exchange hosts a month-long run of Anton Chekhov’s final masterpiece The Cherry Orchard this spring. This major production is directed by Michael Boyd, the former artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and translated by award-winning Manchester-based playwright Rory Mullarkey – whose first full-length play, Cannibals, premiered at the Royal Exchange in 2013 – with its cast led by Kirsty Bushell  and Jude Owusu. Written in 1903, The Cherry Orchard marks changing times in Chekhov’s Russia as revolution hangs in the air. The playwright himself described it as a comedy with some elements of farce, while others have called it a tragedy.
