To mark the 70th anniversary of Partition, Manchester is drawing on its rich history of South Asian culture and artistry with an ambitious exhibition stretching across various museums and galleries across the city. The Whitworth showcases South Asian Modernists (1953-1963) featuring artists such as Avinash Chandra, Ram Kumar and Laxman Pai, and the featured painting by Anwar Jalal Shemza, while Manchester Art Gallery hosts solo shows by five artists and a performance lecture from Tentative Collective. Reena Saini Kallat’s solo exhibition Earth Familites will be at Manchester Museum and performance artist Nikhil Chopra will be at the Museum of Science and Industry creating a one-off 48 hour performance based around a steam locomotive. Alongside all of this there is an independent Indian cinema showcase at HOME (read our preview) and Band on the Wall are programming a series of contemporary South Asian music events.
