Just in time for Manchester Pride, this month sees the premiere of a new LGBT-themed coming out/coming-of-age play. ‘Closets’ is a musical which will have a 10-day run at Hope Mill Theatre, Ancoats. It is 1988, and 16-year-old Henry is struggling with his sexuality, identity, and daily battles with his mother. He goes inside his closet and unexpectedly time travels to 2018 and meets another teenager, Ben, who is dealing with similar issues. They decide to run away together, time traveling in the closet to New York’s Stonewall bar in 1969 and beyond. The show features 13 original pop musical numbers and contemporary ballads. It stars Lloyd Daniels (X-Factor, ‘Joseph’ National Tour); Hayley Tamaddon (Coronation Street, Emmerdale); and Sam Retford (Hollyoaks spinoff Tom’s Life). There are plans to screen the show in select cinemas for LGBT youth groups, and it is currently being adapted into a feature film due to begin production next year.
