While this one-off continuation of oddball pop destination Club Suicide is dedicated to looking forward rather than back, it’s difficult to think about the club, which ran from 2000 to 2004, without a certain nostalgia for a time before ‘the Northern Quarter’, before anybody thought of playing the White Stripes in a rave, or before iTunes made everybody a shit deejay. If London had Trash, and Glasgow had Optimo, Manchester had Club Suicide, a drunken clinch between mainstream pop and cutting-edge electro in a tiny brewery pub above the Arndale Centre and, later, Charlie’s. A ‘can’t mix, won’t mix’ DJ policy, early-career appearances by MIA and Patrick Wolf, and local star turns by the likes of Alpinestars and Moco were all highlights, and its anything-goes ethos had a big influence on Manchester’s 00s nightlife – from Club Brenda to Chips with Everything. A fitting home, Islington Mill hosts this one-off revival with residents Tony and Ryan spinning leftfield tunes, plus there are live appearances from Venezuelan techno chanteuse Aerea Negrot and Sheffield electro-pop outfit HiEM.
