August is notoriously a fallow month for comedy anywhere south of Hadrian’s Wall – but there are still a few flying the stand-up flag across the city to lighten these northern skies. Here’s our pick of the titter…

Tim Clark | Jabez Clegg | Tue 6 Aug | 7pm | £5/£3
A veteran of over 20 years in comedy, Clark (pictured) has had numerous successful Ed Fringe stints, toured with Frank Skinner, he was the first Western comic to perform in Beijing and has written speeches for everyone from Gordon Brown to Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock. An eclectic career delivers inch-perfect social commentary.

Nice Peter | The Deaf Institute | Wed 7 Aug | 7.30pm | £10
The brains behind internet sensation Epic Rap Battles of History takes to the Deaf Institute stage this week, converting online success to the onstage kind. Letting his audience drive the content of the show, no performance is the same as the last, and every one is a joy. There’s a reason why he can boast over a billion Youtube views.

Effed Up Jobs | The Castle Hotel | Wed 7 Aug | 7.30pm | FREE
Though not technically a comedy night, this is bound to be effing funny. A collection of spoken word artists will share the worst in career advice, firings and quitting in style. All for the low, low price of zero pounds. We are in a recession after all. See our full preview here.

Big Value Thursday | Frog and Bucket | Thu 8 Aug | 7pm | £5
With the summer selfishly keeping people outdoors, the Frog has decided to lower its ticket prices to entice people to a dark room to watch social malcontents be funny. Though the price has dropped, the quality has not. MC Dave Williams presents Steve Gribbin, Nina Smith, Scott Gibbon and rising star Steve Shanyaski.

New Stuff | The Comedy Store | Sun 11 Aug | 7.30pm | £3
Trying stuff out in front of the mirror is all well and good for narcissistic comedians, but it’s always better to test the waters of new bits with a live audience. New Stuff, MC’d by Toby Hadoke, gives established acts the chance to try their new material. It could be gold, or it could be lead. Only one way to find out.
