Voted best show at last year’s Vault Festival, the critically acclaimed Bicycles & Fish pops into Waterside as part of a UK tour. The hit one-hander is the debut of award-winning London-based actor and musician Katie Arnstein, and is right on topic, delving into feminism, misogyny and coming of age via comedy, storytelling and original songs. Katie recounts the events of one day in the West Midlands when, aged 16, still in school and hopelessly in love, she finds out what it means to stand up for yourself – the day that she stops being a girl and starts being a woman. With its title lifted from the motivational slogan ‘a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle’, originally coined by the writer Irina Patsi Dunn and subsequently popularised by feminist leader Gloria Steinem, Arnstein’s Bicycles & Fish is inspiring and charming, heart-breaking and hilarious in equal measure.
