Steve Shanyaski | TV21 | Mon 25 Nov | 8pm | FREE
With the abrupt closure of Jabez Clegg last week and the subsequent postponement of XS Malarkey, it is even more important that the smaller clubs continue to put on great shows. Flying the flag for independent comedy clubs is Dead Cat Comedy which presents Steve Shanyaski. A quick and slick comedian, Shanyaski’s star has been in the ascendant for some time and after a great appearance on ITV’s Comedy Rocks he’s in greater demand than ever. Be sure to get down to Dead Cat before they have to start charging. With talent like this on show, they’d have every right.

King Gong | The Comedy Store | Sun 1 Dec | 8pm | £6/3
Slightly more choosy – and certainly more aggressive – than the Frog & Bucket’s Beat the Frog, King Gong is for all those whose favourite X-Factor judge is Simon Cowell, or whoever the bastard one is now that he’s left. Held together with easy charm by Justin Moorhouse, this is a gong show for those who will not suffer fools lightly.

Katie Mulgrew (pictured)| Montpellier’s | Sun 1 Dec | 7pm | FREE
Since opening in August, Montpellier’s has been establishing itself as a great place to watch live comedy. Taking over from their usual Sunday show ‘Green Room Comedy’ is a special appearance from Katie Mulgrew. An impossibly likeable comic with fun and intelligent material, Katie has toured with ‘The Boy With Tape On His Face’ and can also be seen on CBBC’s ‘The Dog Ate My Homework’. A wonderful talent in an intimate venue.
