Tom Allen at XS Malarkey | Jabez Clegg | Tue 3 Sep | 7pm | £5/£3
Tom Allen heads to Jabez Clegg off the back of a gig at End of the Road festival and one on a gay cruise, so surely he’ll have a couple of stories to tell from those. A superb gag crafter and owner of the kind of camp eloquence other performers dream of, Allen is a hair’s breath away from being ubiquitous on the telly box. A great performer, he is helped along the way by Ben Verth, Chris Coltrane and, Phil Ellis who is only just back from Edinburgh, where this happened…

Big Value Thursdays | Frog & Bucket | Thu 5 Sep | 7pm | £9/6
Though the summer saver deals may be over at the Frog, the quality of line-up has not abated; if anything it’s gotten ever better with the wounded heroes of Edinburgh returning with experiences good and bad, ready to regale us of tales from beyond the wall. Howard Read is one such comedian, and after a family-friendly show in Edinburgh he’s ready to tour the UK and throw in at least a couple of swears. Read is joined by fellow fringe vets Mick Ferry, Michael J Dolan and James Meehan of Gein’s Family Giftshop, to give you a bumper night of mirth and merriment.

Upping sticks from South to North (Manchester) is Laugh Local, Chorlton’s best comedy night, which finds a new home in Prestwich for a host of comedy greats. Justin Moorhouse once again MCs, with sets from John Thomson (pictured) of ‘The Fast Show’ and ‘Cold Feet’ fame, plus Greg Cook and Dave Williams. A fantastic night of live comedy that also includes a pasty supper.
