Shhark | The Hold Fast | Mon 14 May | 7.30pm | £2
A welcome addition to the Manchester comedy scene Shhark offers an anarchic and fun place for comedians to try new stuff and punters to get drunk watching them try anything and everything in a very intimate setting. Ringmaster Rob Mulholland doles out the free rum and everything ends up a mess but not without showcasing some of the more alternative comedians this city has to offer. You’re never too sure who might show up but given the Hold Fast’s location below a hostel you can always guarantee at least a couple of confused gap year kids in the crowd.

Jenny Collier | The Bread Shed | Tue 15 May | 7.30pm | £5/3
A couple of years ago Jenny Collier became the face of a feminist movement in comedy when she was struck from a gig because ‘they didn’t want two women on the bill’. She didn’t let that get her down and has gone from strength to strength since writing for BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz, Huffington Post and Glamour Magazine as well as taking two critically acclaimed shows to the Edinburgh Fringe and has performed in Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore, Switzerland and Australia. Now she’s performing at XS Malarkey where there are at least two females on the bill.
