Back in September Group Therapy Comedy opened its doors with a brave philosophy – a Saturday night comedy club that eschewed the hen and stag dos that usually frequent the weekend comedy clubs. Instead it intended to put on a quality night full of cerebral, quirky and the inventive acts of the type that usually make up awards short lists – such as the prestigious Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards (formerly the Perrier). This month’s line up is no exception. Two of the buzziest shows at the Fringe this year were by Pat Burtscher and David Trent. Canadian Burtscher is one of the more innovative new talents on the circuit whose observations are always take an oddball perspective. Meanwhile Trent somehow manages to marry a bombastic stage presence with Power Point with a set culminating in a beautifully executed X-Factor pastiche. St Helens’ Ray Peacock plays affable host comperes proceedings and glorious pedant Chris Stokes completes the line up.
