Fern Brady | Sandbar | Mon 9 Oct | 8pm | FREE
It’s a tough sell to get anyone to do anything on a Monday night, let alone take a punt on a comedy show but if there was ever a line up to get you off your couch at the start of the week it’s this one. Though it may not do too much for your Monday blues you will find a kindred spirit in the misanthropic Fern Brady. One of the smartest comic working in the country at the moment she recently featured in the Vice TV show ‘Brexit Stage Left’ and this is a rare chance to catch her for free (bucket donations encouraged). She’ll be joined by satirist Chris Kehoe who again may not brighten up your day but he’ll certainly make you laugh at how fupped the world is right now.

Control Panel | The Castle Hotel | Tue 10 Oct | 8pm | £3/2
Jack Evans is a mad genius and this may just be his finest invention yet. It’s a panel show that plays on an intergalactic Brexit theme as a team of comedians (and the audience) have to decide whether or not a giant pink furry alien (created by Barnaby Thompson and puppeteered by Jayde Fearnley) deserves sanctuary or not. Tonight sees two episodes filmed back to back featuring comedians such as Danny Sutcliffe, Amy Gledhill and Kate McCabe play judge, jury and possibly executioner for the Gruzzamuff whilst Evans’ intergalactic bureaucrat spews up red tape.

Trapdoor Comedy 3rd Birthday | The Old Monkey | Wed 11 Oct | 7.30pm | £5
A birthday celebration is always a good excuse to head out for midweek revelry and Trapdoor’s celebration of their third anniversary is no exception. Headlining is the nominee for best show at the Leicester Comedy Festival Jim Smallman. Mixing biting wit and the odd vitriol invective with a surprising softer side Smallman won great plaudits and the aforementioned nod for his show 2015 ‘My Girls’ about his wife and daughter. No doubt host Tony Basnett will have more treats up his sleeve for the already die hard fans of a comedy club excitingly still in its infancy.

Sham Bodie | Soup Kitchen | Thu 12 Oct | 7.30pm | £5
The hot dog night with music and comedy is back after a summer hiatus. This time they bring Edinburgh favourites The Delightful Sausage, auteur and half wit playwright Ben Kewin, newcomer Tom Lawrinson and possibly most exciting (though it doesn’t count because it’s not comedy) is musical guest BC Camplight who’ll be playing some tracks of his new album due out in 2018. Also there will be hot dogs and a sober Ben Tonge as host.

Ellie Taylor | The Lowry | Fri 13 Oct | 8pm | £12/10
Star of the likes of Mock the Week, 8 Out of 10 Cats and host of BBC Three’s latest stab at satire ‘The Mast Report’ Ellie Taylor is a very successful and extremely funny comedian. In her latest show ‘This Guy’ she is debating whether or not she should kowtow to societal pressure and pop out some offspring. With Taylor’s wit and charm this should be quite the reasoned debate and a must see for those pondering a similar position and certainly one to catch if you’re my mum and just get off my back okay…
