Cultivate Film Club brings the weirdest and most wonderful films from all corners of the globe to Joshua Brooks each Sunday evening – and this week is no exception. This time the night turns to the former Czechoslovakia for inspiration, screening a double bill of two obscure New Wave greats. Morgiana, from director Juraj Hurz, kicks off the night; a real visual treat with its brilliantly gaudy baroque set design and extravagant cinematography. Actress Iva Janzurová perfectly portrays the rivalry between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ sisters Klara and Viktoria in this experimental Gothic fairytale. Věra Chytilová’s hallucinatory comedy Daisies concludes the evening – a film that is also sadly unappreciated despite being marginally better-known than Morgiana. Originally banned by the Czech government upon completion due to its supposed celebration of ‘anarchy’, Daisies follows the mischievous rampage of two teen girls both named Marie. Revel in the surreal, experimental imagery while taking advantage of the complimentary absinthe, rum and popcorn supplied by Cultivate for the evening.
