Next month sees a special double bill of dance debut at The Lowry. Scottish Dance Theatre, the Dundee Rep based contemporary dance company, arrives at the Quays Theatre with an exhilarating pair of performances. Berlin-based Scottish choreographer Colette Sadler’s Ritualia reimagines Stravinsky’s Les Noces using the concept of androgyny to transform the gender themes of the original ballet and explore it within a post-gender world. The work has been chosen to be part of the UK Dance Showcase at Surf The Wave 2019, a showcase for industry professionals and bookers.Joining Sadler’s piece is a newly commissioned work by Emanuel Gat, The Circle, that includes a new score by Squarepusher. The work uses 12 separate dancers and allows them to bring their own unique energy and dancing style to the stage whilst also feeding off the energy of each other as a collective. Gat has previously been commissioned for performances at Paris Opera Ballet, Sydney Dance Company, ICK Amsterdam, among others. Described by The Scotsman as having a ‘freewheeling quality that challenges expectations, confounds interpretation and invites you to let go and enjoy’ the evening promises to provide cutting edge and thought provoking dance by one of Scotland’s most accomplished dance companies.
