This October, Box of Tricks Theatre presents Danesha, a heartwarming tale of self-love, friendship and queer black identity at The Lowry.

Running from Wed 2 to Sat 5 Oct, Stefanie Reynolds’ Danesha follows the titular young Prestonian who, having persuaded her friends and gently misled her dad, organises a night out for the ages in Manchester city centre. Tired of the cheesy chart hits polluting the provincial clubbing scene, she sources the best metropolitan hotspots with unbeatable vibes and floor-filling deep cuts to soundtrack the party of a lifetime.

When she meets a fascinating female stranger, however, her entire identity becomes uncertain, as her long-held assumptions about not fitting in, dancing differently to your friends and never truly knowing your ancestry and island heritage are dismantled on the spot.

Billed as a warm, funny and stirring exploration of black culture, queer joy and self-acceptance, Danesha promises to delight audiences of all theatrical tastes with a unique coming-of-age story for the modern era.

Sometimes I pretend I’m in a music video. And that I have a backing group. And they’re always black, even though I don’t have any black friends in real life.
