Idents is a new exhibition of work by Daniel Fogarty. On show throughout the ground floor of the Cornerhouse, the exhibition muses on cinema culture and design. Having researched the foyers of different multiplexes throughout Manchester, the artist has developed a series of works that reference the different floor coverings and carpets of his research material. He claims a particular interest in the moments of contemplation and boredom that occur before and between film screenings, times when the design of the foyer can take centre stage. Through media including posters, sculptures and short films Fogarty’s work distills and reframes the various patterns and illustrations of the multiplex foyer. Located in the foyer, on table tops, projected on the cinema screens, and covering the walls of the café-bar, the space is imbued with echoes of commercial cinema history, fusing the design of the mass entertainment foyer with that of the art gallery setting.
