Given that they’re the Manchester Modernist Society, most of their events so far have been based, well, in Manchester. But there’s only so much modernism you can get from one city, so the MMS have organised a jaunt elsewhere, with a coach ride taking anyone interested over for a specially arranged trip around the Mellor Design Museum. Celebrating the life and work of David Mellor, the first stop will be Hathersage, visiting the RIBA award winning building that houses Mellor’s cutlery factory. Usually shut on weekends, the Modernist Society have sorted a tour of the premises, before moving on to the designer’s former home for a look around. Built in 1959, the building was formerly split into two – workshop and living quarters – and is now a well looked after home, with owners who understand the heritage of this Grad II listed site. Finishing off the day will be a short stay at the Arts Tower and Library at Sheffield University, with access – hopefully – to both.

Sat 17 Aug, Coach leaves from Fairfield Street, Manchester, M1 2QF, 10am – 6pm, £25 for non-members, £20 for members, http://eventbrite.co.uk/
