A derelict Stockport pub, which has stood empty for over two and a half years, is soon set to reopen following a £1m revival project.

The Golden Hind in Offerton has been purchased by Joseph Holt, with the Manchester-based brewery having committed to a seven-figure investment as it seeks to create a ‘traditional pub and lively hub for the entire community and beyond’.

The Lisburne Lane venue closed in November 2023 after 56 years of trading. In the intervening time, campaigns and petitions were set up by residents and backed by councillors in the area to ensure the building’s future as a pub.

Public planning application documents detail a significant scope of works, including a brand-new canopied terrace, a new bar and lounge with a log burner, the installation of a traditional snug, new toilets, improved landscaping surrounding the pub and more.

Pub managers Brian and Donna Holroyd say they want to bring a personal touch to The Golden Hind when it reopens in November.

“Pubs are so much more than bricks and motor,” explains Donna. “They are places where people can meet, socialise, be assured of a warm welcome and feel part of a community. The local area has been without a pub for three years and people have had nowhere to go . So, we really want to make the Golden Hind somewhere for everyone -whether its somewhere to have  a drink, enjoy lots of  live entertainment – which we`ll be doing five evenings a week –  or  take part  in groups being hosted at the pub.”

John Clarke, the Chairman of the Stockport & South Manchester CAMRA branch, pointed out: “It’s great news that The Golden Hind will be reopening under the stewardship of Joseph Holt’s Brewery. Having a local owner rather than a national brand will ensure this pub regains its rightful place as an excellent community asset.”

Richard Kershaw, CEO of Joseph Holt, added: “We have invested over £1 million in The Golden Hind to create a pub in the truest traditional sense  – complete with open fireplaces, generous outdoor spaces, and comfortable, characterful furnishings.

“As a brewery we are committed to putting pubs back into the heart of local communities. since we really understand they create a deep, social connection. We are sure that under Brian and Donna`s management, the revival of the Golden Hind will once again  make it the kind of warm local pub those who come from both near and far can enjoy.”
