While the ‘offensively trendy pop-up gourmet burger joint’ craze shows no sign of abating, as London outlets MEATliquor and Lucky Chip boast daily queues and Manchester’s own Almost Famous opens on a permanent basis, the humble hot dog looks set to become the next buzz food. Bubbledogs, a ‘champagne and hot dog concept’ (?!) opens next month in Soho – and here in Manchester Dirty Dogs make their debut in Port Street Beer House’s back yard on Thursday. The ‘dogs sound pretty tasty: toppings include pulled pork and BBQ sauce (no self-respecting pop-up can operate without pulled pork right now, it’s practically a legal requirement) or a sweet and smoky beef chilli and cheese. They’re there as part of Port Street’s IPA Day event, the second year of this worldwide celebration of, as they put it ‘the world’s best and most experimental beer style’. As a big fan of the bacon beer they had on draft a while back, I’d contest that last point, but no matter. Yorkshire’s Summerwine Brewery will also be on hand to launch their new Black IPA, Gorilla.
