With a long weekend to look forward to, it’s fair to say a night out is on the cards. As usual Manchester’s promoters are on the money with some great events to look forward to. We’ve rounded up the best of the bunch below, including a High Hoops and Discwoman collaboration, Community with Motor City Drum Ensemble and Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu), and Helena Hauff leading her Return To Disorder label showcase at The White Hotel.
High Hoops x Discwoman w/ Volvox, Umfang, Inga Mauer & Shyboi at Hidden
High Hoops kick off the bank holiday weekend with their first collaboration with Discwoman, the New York-based collective of female-identifying DJs founded by Frankie Hutchinson and Emma Burgess-Olson (aka Umfang). Expect fluid Detroit-inspired, lo-fi techno sounds from Umfang, while Volvox is known for her harder-edge sets, and has performed alongside The Black Madonna and Marcel Dettman. Jamaican-born DJ Shyboi will make her Manchester debut.

A Love From Outer Space at The Refuge
The Refuge’s busy Easter weekend runs from Thursday to Sunday with a series of special activities, collaborations and events. Alongside the Bluedot Festival Family Takeover on Sunday and a temporary record fair on Saturday, ‘A Love From Outer Space’ will be back in The Refuge’s basement space for one night only. ALFOS, as the night has come to be known, started life in a North-London basement, and now tours festivals and clubs worldwide. ALFOS is the DJ side project of producers Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston, who aim to ‘never knowingly exceed 122bpm’ at the decks. It’s heavy hypnotic house, for a slower vibe over your bank holiday weekend.

P13 present Return To Disorder ft. Helena Hauff, Umwelt and Morah at The White Hotel
Project 13 invite Return to Disorder to The White Hotel for a label showcase headed up by owner, Helena Hauff. The Hamburg based artist’s raw, EBM and industrial influenced sound and carefully curated sets have made her one of the most sought after selectors of the moment. Return To Disorder will also exhibit the work of Umwelt, the veteren French DJ with over 40 releases to his name and a reputation for heavy-hitting, immersive electro and techno. Athens-based producer Morah completes the line-up with some dark scuzzy-sounding industrial minimalism.

Horse Meat Disco’s Easter Egg at Gorilla
The self-styled ‘queer party for everyone’ Horse Meat Disco host an Easter Egg special. Horse Beat provide a night of all-round up-beat disco that you wont be able to stop yourself from dancing to, and/or, singing along with. From Fleetwood Mac, to some old-school motown, funk and soul, Horse Meat Disco will be a feel-good party for all, but tickets sell out so book ahead.

Community with Motor City Drum Ensemble, Kamaal Williams and Dele Sosima at Albert Hall
Danilo Plessow, better known as Motor City Drum Ensemble headlines a night of deep, soulful house at The Albert Hall. MCDE creates a joyfully crafted blend of disco and house, not too clean, and with selections that dig-deep into the archive. South London artist Henry Wu’s Jazzier alter-ego, Kamaal Williams – half of the duo behind the Black Focus record – will perform live. As a producer, Wu has released on favoured UK labels Rhythm Section and 22a, so be sure to catch his DJ set later in the night for an expert mix of jazzy riffs and loose, tumbling beats. Also in the line-up is Dele Sosimi, a Nigerian-British musician who has worked with Fela Kuti and Tony Allen (performing with a 15 piece orchestra) and Chicago name Rahaan, for an eclectic mix of funk and disco beats.
