A new exhibition at Manchester Museum centres on the issue of species loss. Extinction or Survival? explores how humans have damaged biodiversity through over exploitation and changes to natural habitats. Most people are familiar with the case of the dodo, but also explored are lesser known extinctions, such as the loss of insects and plant life. The exhibition also looks at areas that humans have had a positive impact, i.e. where monitoring and conservation efforts have brought endangered organisms back from the brink. Extinction or Survival? presents diverse ways in which the public themselves can make a difference for nature. The evolutionary biologist and broadcaster Dr Ben Garrod will open the exhibition. You may know of Garrod’s work at the BBC, where he worked with Sir David Attenborough and presented his own series, Secrets of Bones.
