Enduring Eye is a new photography exhibition which chronicles Ernest Shackleton’s exploration of the Antarctic from 1914-17. During this mission, his ship The Endurance became trapped in ice and later sank. The crew survived for months on floating ice before Shackleton and a small team bravely sailed a small lifeboat hundreds of miles to get help for the others. Thankfully, all the crew members were saved, and they managed to return will the fragile glass negatives of the photos they took. These photographs, now digitally remastered, show in vivid detail what life was like for the explorers, both before and after their ship was destroyed. They capture the spirit of courage shared by Shackleton and his team during this epic struggle for survival. Next Sunday, there will be an afternoon of special events linked with the exhibition. For the grownups, there will be guided tours of the collection, with the chance to see and handle some of the venue’s rare treasures. Seb Coultard, an award-winning sailor who recently re-enacted Shackleton’s survival mission, will be in attendance. For the little ’uns, the Scallywag Theatre Company will be on hand to help kids explore the Library in a fun way. There will also host of other fun activities.
