John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, one of the great works of English literature, is now 350 years old. Doesn’t time fly? The Portico Library is marking this sesquarcentennial anniversary with a special exhibition called Be Strong, Live Happy and Love. This begins on Friday but there’s a free launch event on Thursday evening. The exhibition includes the library’s own first illustrated edition of the text and associated volumes on loan from partner archives alongside illustrations by William Blake and John Martin and work by contemporary female artists. Kate Shaw, Chloë Manasseh, Helen Mather, and Ilona Kiss have created pieces in different media to bring new perspectives to the text.
