Boris Nzebo impressive solo’s exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery includes large-scale paintings and new work with steel cut-outs. The Cameroonian artist explores the themes of urbanity and identity, taking inspiration from the streets and local neighbourhoods of his native city of Douala, superimposing shapes of human heads onto local architectural silhouettes and facades with a pop-art sensibility. In integrating individuals with their modern urban environments, the artist questions narratives of personal and private space and the intimate relationship between them. Evoking graffiti, murals and billboard advertisements, as well as Andy Warhol’s reproductions, Nzebo’s style is, nevertheless, instantly recognisable.
