Portraits of British Playwrights, a new exhibition of photographs by Simon Annand at the Royal Exchange, includes revealing photographs of playwrights in the places they work and find inspiration. Subjects include Tom Stoppard at the National Theatre, David Hare in his study, Sarah Solemani in the bath, and Johnny Vegas, thankfully not in the bath, but in a rowing boat. Annand has been a photographer for over 30 years, and his work has focussed on all aspects of the theatre, including rehearsal photos, posters and headshots. Over the years, he has worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Court and the Moscow Arts Theatre. This exhibit was commissioned by the group behind the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting, to mark the prize’s 10th anniversary.
