Duly recognised as one of the year’s strongest and most vibrant (not to mention danceable) albums – Piccadilly Records recently made it the top release of their 2014 mid-year review – the self-titled Ibibio Sound Machine LP is a monster of styles including West African highlife, disco and post-punk all rooted in Nigerian folklore and pushing forward with bass-led electronic production. Eno WIlliams fronts an 8-piece band of musicians at the top of their game, including Alfred ‘Kari’ Bannerman, guitarist of 70s Afro-rockers Osibisa and London outfit KonKoma (also signed to Ibibio’s label, the world-music gathering Soundway Records). This will be their debut Manchester performance – expect energy! Have a listen to a selection of their sun-drenched West African influences on Mixcloud here, and check their performance of Let’s Dance on Jools Holland here.
