Following a sold-out run at London’s Discover Children’s Story Centre, the interactive Fairy Tales experience launches at Z-arts Manchester on Tue 5 Apr and will be around until Feb 2023.

An immersive realm of play and storytelling for under-8s, the event will transform Hulme’s cultural hotspot into a mythical wonderland, introducing visitors to classic folklore characters.

Designed by award-winning illustrator David Litchfield and author Ross Montgomery in collaboration with the Discover Children’s Centre, the exhibition enchantingly reimagines nine beloved stories from England, France, Germany, Norway and Ghana.

Children and parents alike are encouraged to dress up for the occasion, as they follow the breadcrumbs through story-town before dining at Hansel and Gretel’s cafe, create architecture that could withstand the Big Bad Wolf’s flurries at the Little Pigs Builder’s Yard, and head over to the market for a game of beans with Jack before he climbs up to the giant’s castle.

From Anansi the Spider and Little Red Riding Hood to Three Billy Goats Gruff and the Musicians of Bremen, Fairy Tales promises to acquaint children with adored stories from around the globe in the most imaginative and bewitching way.

“Snuggling up and listening to fairytales such as Anansi or Goldilocks is as much a part of early childhood as your first day at school,” says Z-arts’ Head of Creative Development, Saskia Metcalf. “It really is like being inside a pop-up book of fairytales.”

As the only UK venue aside from the Discovery Children’s Story Centre to host the experience, Z-arts invites Fairy Tales to Manchester following enormously successful runs of The Tiger who Came to Tea, Michael Rosen’s Chocolate Cake and Bad Things and many more interactive child-oriented adventures. Alongside four daily experiences from Tuesday to Sunday during the school holidays, the last Saturday of the month will feature an accessible session for families with additional needs and each 10am exhibition during the school holidays will be socially distanced.
