The UK premiere of Mike Leigh’s much anticipated new film, Peterloo took place at Home on Wednesday (10 Oct 2018) and it’s on general release from Friday 2 November. As well as being the first UK screening of the film, Wednesday’s premiere was the first time that that the London BFI Film Festival has screened a film outside the capital. Peterloo is based on the events of Manchester’s infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre. In the film, Oscar-nominated British director, Mike Leigh, directs Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake and Neil Bell in an epic retelling of the tale which saw a peaceful pro-democracy march in St. Peter’s Field escalate into one of the bloodiest episodes in British domestic history. The hundreds of protesters killed or injured sparked outrage, and became a defining moment in the history of British democracy.
