Stockport’s 1930s Plaza cinema will host a double-bill of thrillers this week. Grimm Up North’s first outing of 2013 features Roman Polanski’s unsettling, masterful study of paranoia, Repulsion (1965), fully remastered and show here in HD. The psychological horror – Polanski’s first English language film – was filmed in London and features Catherine Deneuve. Repulsion is paired with the North West premiere of Chained (2012), by Jennifer Lynch (daughter of David). Described by the organisers as ‘one of the most controversial and uncompromising thrillers of our time’, it’s a bone-chilling study of entrapment and control. Stockport Plaza is one of the country’s oldest surviving cinemas, dating back to 1932. Since 2009, the now Grade II listed building has been restored to its original configuration.
