Even by its own incredibly high standards, Cornerhouse has been showing some excellent films of late. Fritz Lang’s M and two of Kubrick’s very best – 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dr Strangelove – have been screened in only the last few days, for example. Capping off this week is something a little different, but no less interesting. Filmed Up, taking place on Friday, is their quarterly festival of short films by up-and-coming directors. A dozen movies by grassroots guerrilla film-makers and production start-ups from the North West have been selected by a panel of Cornerhouse audience members. Highlights are likely to include Going to Mecca (Dir. Jason Wingard), which tells the story of two half-brothers travelling to Blackpool to find their missing father, and Delicacy (Dir. Helen Curran), set during World War II and showing two British soldiers trying to survive behind enemy lines.
