Filmonik is hijacking the Cornerhouse Annexe for its traditional end-of-year celebration this week. The film organisation will be celebrating the Winter Solstice in style with seasonal cinematic stocking-fillers galore, drinks and maybe a few mince pies. For the Christmas challenge, Filmonik is asking for a festively themed film to be made within 72 hours, ready to screen the results at this evening event. The film must also fit other essential requirements, which will be announced at a meeting on Thursday 12 December at the Federation House on Balloon Street. The concept behind this challenge is that everything has to be made from scratch within the three-day period. While Filmonik’s new permanent space is scheduled to be open to the public in the New Year, for the Festive Challenge it will be made available to the challenge participants, serving as a daytime lab or shooting studio. The organisation offers an open platform for the North West’s independent film-makers, with their screenings offering a censor-free environment. The films are not pre-screened and selected but simply ‘booked in’ and presented in an open-mic fashion. The event is extremely limited capacity and all tickets must be purchased in advanced.

Screenings Sun 15 Dec (challenge begins Thu 15 Dec), Cornerhouse , 70 Oxford Street, M1 5NH, 7.30pm, £5, www.eventbrite.co.uk
