Going out to see a film usually means that you’ll at least know the title of what you’re about to watch, if nothing else. Manchester’s Filmonik group and their ‘open mic’ film nights offer a completely different kind of screening experience. There’s no schedule, no line-up and no exclusion – absolutely anybody can turn up and have their creation shown, provided only that it is under 10 minutes long and that the official Filmonik open screening end-slate has been included at the end. Films are selected completely at random, so expect the unexpected – from drama to comedy to horror to the completely undefinable. Whether it’s good or bad, they’ll show it all. Sounds chaotic, but it’s actually part of an incredibly popular movement with similar groups in existence worldwide. Though bringing a film along guarantees free entry, there’s certainly no obligation to show anything; non-filmmakers can still feel welcome here and simply enjoy the relaxed vibe at this rather unique event.
