It’s been a tough year for the hospitality industry, but in up-and-coming Prestwich, there are still signs of the restaurant boom that had been gripping the area prior to the pandemic. New restaurant Gorge, which has been completed during the pandemic, is set to bring a taste of Brazil to Prestwich from the Monday 17 May indoor dining date.

Gorge, the brainchild of Steve Vickerstaff (owner of the Manchester BBQ Company) will offer finest quality cuts of meat and fish dishes, accompanied by sumptuous sides and finished off with handmade Brazilian desserts. “We want to offer the people of Prestwich great food combined with a relaxed atmosphere where you can go for a cocktail or a coffee as well as a fantastic meal,” says Steve.

“We chose Prestwich because it’s one of the most up-and-coming areas in Greater Manchester. We think that the pandemic will see more people going out where they live, certainly initially anyway. You pay a premium in a city centre restaurant and the Prestwich location allows us to serve top quality food at reasonable prices. Prestwich and other similar areas are showing that you don’t need to be in the city for a great night out!”

The restaurant’s signature dish will be Costella de Boi – beef rib slow-cooked for a truly melt in the mouth taste. The duo are also planning a rodizio-style evening on Wednesdays, for those looking for a decadent mid-week treat. “The impact of the pandemic has certainly been felt by all of us here at Gorge,” says Steve. “We were almost ready to open when Manchester was plunged into tier 3 with very little warning. It’s been tough because we had recruited staff and even had our handmade desserts created, and we had to put it all on hold. We’ve definitely felt it mentally.”

Despite having a small outside area to the rear, the Gorge team are holding off opening plans until Monday 17 May, the Government’s set date for reopening indoor hospitality. “It’s been a long time coming, but we’re so excited to finally be able to open our doors and bring succulent BBQ food to the people of Prestwich!” Vickerstaff added. Gorge joins new additions L’Aqulia and Prestwich Social, both of which are in the North Manchester borough. The restaurant is located on Bury New Road, in the heart of Prestwich Village.
