La Calçotada festival of onions and wine at Ibérica
Spinningfields’ Spanish eatery Ibérica is offering guests the chance to celebrate a winter food festival based on giant onions and ‘red wine poured into the mouth from a great height’. A cultural and gastronomic ritual special to Spaniards, La Calçotada involves giant, calçot onions grown near the sea shores and prepared to a family recipe as the beginning of this traditional experience. The ticket covers food and wine.

Chorlton’s Lead Station celebrates 20 years with new cookbook (pictured)
The Lead Station, a fixture on Chorlton’s Beech Road, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a cookery book. The Lead Station Cookbook is part recipe book, part day-in-the-life-of-offering an insight in to the bar and kitchen’s operation, as well as snippets of local history, supplier profiles and a tribute from Lead Station regular Damon Gough. Owner Nick de Sousa took over the Lead Station in 2007, and has since opened Tariff & Dale in the Northern Quarter.

Spain Uncorked wine tasting at Manchester Art Gallery
An exciting wine tasting collaboration is arriving at the Mosley Street gallery, and it doesn’t get much more Spanish than this. Wineries of Ribera del Duero and Rueda are providing the nectar, with Jane Dowler from Manchester stalwart Evuna hosting event, and guiding guests through regions of Spain with a range of wines and tapas. The Manchester Wine School will be on hand for advice, as local musician Glenn Sharp plays classical Spanish guitar. The ticket includes a tasting of 40 wines plus canapés, and the opportunity to add on a food and wine pairing session.

Vegan supper club RSPCA fundraiser at Nexus Art Cafe
Nexus Art Cafe are hosting a vegan pop-up event this Friday at their Dale Street HQ. Run by the Manchester & Salford Branch of the RSPCA, tickets will raise money for the local charity and includes a three course meal. They’re asking for advance bookings only and places are limited, so haste is required. Choose from starters of vegan sushi or quiche followed by chilli, nachos, guacamole and sour ‘cream’ or ‘Ploughmans’ of bread, ‘cheese’, roasted veg, coleslaw, olives, pickles and side salad. Desserts are chocolate avocado mousse or carrot cake. There will be a non-alcoholic bar available on the night.

Viet Shack starts healthy dessert revolution
Arndale Market-based Vietnamese outfit, Viet Shack, are a go-to in the city centre for summer rolls, noodles and wraps. They’ve recently started baking their own sweet treats as well. On an ad hoc but delicious basis, delights may include green tea chocolate raspberry tarts. It’s best to check their Twitter and Instagram to keep abreast of what’s being concocted.
