Food: Win breakfast for two at Bill’s during Veganuary 2020

A firm family favourite, British dining chain Bill’s opened up in the former Giraffe space in Spinningfields at the end of October, adding a warm and comforting new venue to this thriving section of town, just in time for deepest winter. Previously found on John Dalton Street, the restaurant has made the move to the bustling Hardman Square – just a stone’s throw from the likes of cocktail spot The Alchemist and fine dining establishment 20 Stories and, in our opinion, it’s an excellent choice. Originating in a humble greengrocers in Lewes, East Sussex in 2001, the eatery has come a long way in the intervening years, with this new space – beautifully styled with handpicked, vintage furniture making you feel like you’re dining in the comfort of your own home – being the latest addition to their portfolio.

The founder is Bill Collison, who sold the small group of restaurants to Richard Caring in 2016 – and there are now approximately 81 around the UK. Despite growing in number, the restaurants are designed with their own style and aim to capture an independent feel. The menu features a range of classic and tasty British dishes and a rotating specials list that changes depending on the day of the week. Highlights include kale and red onion hummus on toasted sourdough with poached eggs, carrot, cashew nut and mushroom wellington and Bill’s signature fish pie. All in all, Bill’s is a welcome and reasonably priced Spinningfields’ addition, perfect for after-work dining or a break from exploring the Christmas Markets.

What’s more – in early January, Bill’s will be resurrecting their British Veganuary menu which features a wide-selection of green-grub to help you on your way to a healthy 2020. Diners can expect to find the likes of Wild Mushroom Soup, Miso Aubergine Fritters and Bill’s Beetroot Steak alongside a selection of free-from desserts like Sticky Chocolate Pudding and Amaretto and Raspberry Frozen Parfait.
