For Books Sake, the Manchester-based webzine that promotes writing by and for independent women, is teaming up with the BookMachine to celebrate its second birthday at indie club the Star and Garter on Friday 12 October. As befits a birthday bash, there will be cake, booze, prizes and surprises in abundance, as well as entertainment in the form of readings from some of Manchester’s finest writers, including short story writer Zoe Lambert (pictured – author of the War Tour), poet and performance artist Claire Robertson and novelist Emma Jane Unsworth (writer of Hungry, the Stars and Everything). Most intriguing of all, flash fiction writers Sarah-Clare Conlon and David Gaffney are combining their talents for Les Malheureux, a live literature collaboration using music, storytelling and visuals to create an experience For Books Sake promises will be ‘stranger than fiction’.

Fri 12 Oct, Star and Garter, 18-20 Fairfield Street, M1 2QF, Tel: 0161 273 6726, 7.30pm, FREE, forbookssake.net
