It’s often easy to overlook our reliance on texts in our day-to-day lives, from road signs, labels and news bulletins to articles, novels and lyrics. Manchester Craft & Design Centre seeks to highlight the influence of these texts in its latest exhibition, Forming Words, featuring a selection of contemporary objects inspired by the meanings and communication behind such word-based forms. With the works being commissioned by London’s Flow Gallery, the artists’ inspirations extend the shapes and lines of the letters themselves right through to the messages the texts communicate, expressed through materials including jewellery and memories weaved in thread. For an exclusive preview, the exhibition launches on Saturday 13 July with live entertainment, refreshments and a chance to meet some of the artists.
