It was in the vast and sinister walls of the hallowed Berghain nightclub in Berlin that Winter Son (aka Ghosting Season’s Thomas Ragsdale) met Sankey’s resident DJ Jozef K. After discovering a shared love of techno, grunge and all things melancholic the pair (pictured) decided to make music together. Their debut EP The Straw That Broke The Camel’s Back (on Sasha’s label Last Night On Earth) draws on both producers’ backgrounds, with influences ranging from the commercial dance world and leftfield, brooding electronica. The somewhat unlikely pairing of two of Manchester’s most important house, techno and experimental exponents makes Jozef K and Winter Son’s music an eclectic mix of heads down warehouse atmospheres, raw dancefloor energy and the haunting introspection most closely associated with Ragsdale’s Ghosting Season project. Combining the clear DJ talents of Jozef K and complex compositional comsiderations of Ragsdale (including, we are told, live 808 drums), the EP launch this weekend should be an unmissable event on the Manchester electronic music calendar.
