We saw vinyl sales topple their digital counterparts last year but another format is seeing a resurgence: cassettes. Seen as a neat way to help smaller acts release their music physically and more personally, David McLean’s Tombed Visions cassette-based label hones in on ambient and experimental electronica with acclaim from The Wire, Electronic Beats and more. With Common on hosting duties and DJ sets from label residents during interludes, McLean has curated a lineup that includes surrealist short stories by Tales From The Bleach Chameleon, for whom he crafts a reactive soundtrack; dense minimalism delivered by electronica project School House, and jazz-influenced gothicism from Aging, whose composition includes players on keys, saxophones and double bass. This is part of Common’s monthly series focusing on independent labels – watch this space for more.
