On Saturday 7 May, a showcase of women’s art, music, photography, and film, plus a celebration of local, radical history, will be taking place at Alexandra Park in Manchester, as part of the Pankhurst in the Park 2016 Spring Showdown, curated by Alexandra Arts. Highlights of the programme include access to the newly restored Chorlton Lodge which will host a showdown launch and special exhibition of local artwork. Sarah Gavron, director of award-winning 2015 film, Suffragette, will take part in a live discussion at Alexandra Park Pavilion as International Artists in Residence, Bunny Collective guide visitors around their woodland exhibition of artwork inspired by surrounding communities during their two-month residency at Alexandra Park. On top of all that, Manchester’s finest DJs including Fiona McDonald, Wondergupta, Andrea Trout and SNO will be serving up a winning soundtrack. Pankhurst in the Park is a celebration of the suffrage movement and the life and work of famous local resident, Emmeline Pankhurst. Born in Moss Side, Pankhurst was pivotal in campaigning for women’s right to vote and the artist-led Alexandra Arts group’s homage to her legacy is a fitting tribute.
