The Canal Festival in Piccadilly Basin – already home to Ancoats’ LomoWall and an art project involving beach huts – will be adding an outdoor cinema to its celebrations this month. The float/drive/walk-in cinema in the Ducie Street car park will be screening two films over two nights: on Wednesday 22 August, catch Captain America – filmed (in part) in the Northern Quarter.  On Thursday 23, enjoy The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, the film having pipped Finding Nemo and Jaws in a Twitter vote last month. As a prelude, projections of 40 images short-listed for Manchester Photographic’s Urban Canal photography prize will be shown as well as a stop-motion animation of the LomoWall’s construction. Oldham Street’s Malaysian restaurant, Ning, will be providing food and drinks ahead of the screenings at 8.30pm.

Wed 22 Aug & Thu 23 Aug, Ducie Street, M1 2JB, 6pm (screenings 8.30pm), FREE, cityco.com.
