Spanish and Italian Short Films at Instituto Cervantes
The Kinofilm Short Film Festival finishes this weekend, but they’re packing a lot into the last couple of days, including these free screenings at the Instituto Cervantes on Friday night. The Deansgate language school will host two sessions featuring short films from Spain and Italy respectively. The Spanish programme contains six dark tales from up-and-coming directors, with themes of stolen identity and Francoist clowns. The five films in the second screening unpick the minutiae of Italian life, and our followed by Italian wine and pasta salad tasting. The two events follow one another, but you have to register separately for each.

Magic Rock Takeover at Café Beermoth
This Friday and Saturday city-centre craft beer specialists Café Beermoth will be hosting a tap takeover from Magic Rock Brewery. The Huddersfield-based brewery will be taking over all 16 lines, with a range of wild keg and cask ales with exciting names like Cherry Cola Vice and Dancing Bear. They’ll also be offering three variations on their rocketfuel-strength Bearded Lady dessert beers, with chocolate, hazelnut and salted caramel flavours on offer. Booze aside, street food pop up Howlin Tacos will also be bringing the heat with a truckload of Tex Mex goodies.

Gestured Workshop at Chetham’s Library

Gavin Searle Talk & Screening at University of Manchester (pictured)
For one of the final events of Kinofilm, documentary-maker Gavin Searle comes to the University for a free preview screening of his latest work followed by a Q&A. A Manchester University alumnus himself, Gavin is a multi award-winning filmmaker, perhaps best known for his work on Tribe and Meet The Natives. He’ll be talking about the value of TV anthropology and its future, within the context of his own career and forthcoming series Last Treehouse.
