From lunchtime today and tomorrow, Band on the Wall is hosting a bumper programme of film screenings for FREE. Each film has a musical bent and highlights include Wim Wenders’ Steadycam portrait of the Buena Vista Social Club on home turf in Havana (today, 1.30pm, listen to Chan Chan) as well as a screening of groupie / heavy rock classic Almost Famous (today, 8.30pm) written and directed by Cameron Crowe (pictured), based on his own experiences as a 15-year-old music critic. The film features a mesmerising performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman as the young Crowe’s grizzly mentor. Tomorrow has some gems too, such as documentary, Standing in the Shadow of Motown (Fri, 1pm) with a delicious soundtrack and, of course, Anton Corbjin’s portrait of the last days of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis in Control (Fri, 9pm).
