Two hundred years on from Manchester’s notorious Peterloo Massacre, the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society will commemorate the victims of the Manchester Magistrates and Yeoman Cavalry’s overzealous intentions to break up a peaceful gathering at St Peter’s Field. First up, on Wednesday 1 May, Geoff Higginbottom and The Free Radicals will revisit the infamous event through stories and song. The same evening will highlight the Maxine Peake-endorsed graphic novel Witnesses To A Massacre (published by Myriad and New Internationalist). Artists Paul Fitzgerald (aka Polyp) and Eva Schlunke have been working with historian Robert Poole to produce a vivid ‘comic book’ retelling of the story, which they will talk about at this event.
