The Working Class Movement Library in Salford presents Invisible Histories, a series of free talks which look at some lesser-known areas of local history. The first event, which takes place later this month, is entitled ‘Pit Props’ and it focusses on the miners’ strike of 1984-85. The host, author Granville Williams, will be discussing the creative links between music, politics, and protest which formed during the strike. Also discussed will be the international support which helped sustain the miners and their families during their year of struggle. Following this, there will be four more talks, taking place at fortnightly intervals. These cover a wide range of subjects, such as the Chartists, trade unionism in the inter-war period, and Engels’ relationship with the Irish in Manchester. The Library can be found opposite Salford University, just a short walk from Salford Crescent station.

First talk: Wed 14 Sep – Wed 23 Nov, Working Class Movement Library, Jubilee House, 51 Crescent, Salford, M5 4WX, Tel: 0161 736 3601, 2pm, FREE, www.wcml.org.uk
