This week we’ve got a wholesome feast of free things to do, with heaps of sporting events, a day trip over to Leeds and dissecting a sheep’s brain over at MOSI.

A great chance to get out of Manchester for the day, use this weekend to hop over to nearby Leeds for their first Indie Food Festival, a month-long celebration of independent food and drink culture that only kicked off on Thursday. Free highlights include the Brandon Street Night Market at Canal Mills on Friday, Belgrave Feast and Art Market at Belgrave Music Hall on Saturday, kids’ pizza making classes on Sunday, an art exhibition exploring the brewing process and more.

Pi: Platform for Investigation: Brain Attack
Pi: Platform for Investigation is MOSI’s interactive pop-up space showcasing cutting edge science up close, inviting brainy types in to strut their stuff. This week, find out how brains function and what they feel like, with this rare insight into the workings of one of our most vital organs. Run by leading neuroscientists from The University of Manchester, with support from the Stroke Association, Brain Attack features interactive displays, talks and even a guided dissection of a sheep brain.

The Great CityGames
The unique opportunity to see some of the world’s most famous athletes, The Great CityGames plucks world-class names and drops them onto the streets of Manchester. Expected to draw a crowd of 25,000, the athletics display takes place on the track on Deansgate and at a purpose built arena in Albert Square, where you’ll find stars including Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill, Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford, European indoor pentathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson and 2015 European indoor 60m champion Richard Kilty. Part of a bumper weekend of sport in Manchester, there’s also the Junior and Mini Great Manchester Run, and the Great Manchester Run – Europe’s biggest 10k – worth watching.
