Christmas Blitz at IWM North
75 years ago, Manchester was bombarded by German air raids and this new event at the Imperial War Museum looks to commemorate this. Taking place daily throughout December, these take you through life in wartime Salford as seen through the eyes of those that witnessed the bombing. If you wanted to take a break from festivities and take in something at a more sombre and reflective pace, this would be ideal. It’s also a fantastic excuse to experience one of the city’s most impressive museums and one of the Quay’s most impressive structures.

Print Fair Launch at Portico Library (pictured)
Tucked away above The Bank on Mosley Street is the Portico Library, a small but attractive little library that’s also one of Manchester’s best rising events spaces. This print fair features the work of twelve artists, printmakers and collectives working in a variety of mediums, presenting a raft of limited run and one-off pieces. You can get to grips with all this at their launch party, with creatives on hand and live music and refreshments provided. The fair runs six days a week until Mon 21 Dec, from 9.30am through to evening, so there’s plenty of opportunity to pick a little something later in this month.

What’s That? at Islington Mill
Manchester Custom Framing operate out of Islington Mill and provide all kinds of weird and wonderful picture frames for artists and enthusiasts. To show off their great work they’re hosting a series of events and exhibitions, starting with What’s That? – an exhibition of work by prop and accessory maker Mariel Osborn. The exhibition showcases both personal and commercial work, which takes a playful look at advertising. If that isn’t enough, ace local brewers Cloudwater will be providing refreshments for the evening.
