January’s over! Let the fun begin! We’ll bet that wallet of yours took a beating this time last weekend, though, so ease the strain with these free things to do.

SAVWO exhibition launch at The Spoon Inn (pictured)
We’ve always been big fans of Manchester-based illustrator John Powell-Jones (SAVWO) – especially when he designed this little beauty for us a few years back – and now he’s launching new work at The Spoon Inn in Chorlton. Co-curated with Skyliner, their rear lounge has been transformed into the ‘Art House’ with residencies from local artists, and this weekend marks your chance to see the work of one of our favourite guys. Expect a style that blends illustration with fine art, drawing on his knowledge and experience of traditional print processes. The work launches on Saturday, where there will be DJs and various drinks offers.
Sat 7 Feb, The Spoon Inn, 364 Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton, M21 8AZ, 7 – 11.30pm, FREE, www.facebook.com

Play Harder: Symposum at Toast
Play Harder is a short-term residency curated by MUTO collective, who have invited emerging artists based in both France and Manchester to work collaboratively within the same space, Federation House’s Toast. Exploring how open-ended productivity and process can be an artistic practice, and art labour can be an art work, the focus is on the creation of a cross-cultural dialogue through the sharing of varied practices. Symposium launches this Saturday with resident artists Beth Kettel, Tiphaine Lemou, Kathryn Miller, Emily Tilzey, Océane Tur and Stéphanie Vivier.
Launches Sat 7 Feb, Toast Manchester, 6th Floor, Federation House, M60 0AF, 7.30 – 9pm, FREE, www.mutocollective.com

Acoustic Bhuna at Band on the Wall
Partner free live music with curry, and you’ll get Band on the Wall’s Acoustic Bhuna. It’s an undoubtedly winning combination that not only helps you ease your way through the final hours of the weekend, but also showcases local musicians and homegrown talent – never a bad thing, especially when you can show your support and nurse a Sunday beer both at the same time. Headlining this week is rock/folk/pop 5-piece Rook & The Ravens, fresh from a 3 week tour of the States, whilst support comes from folk songwriter and flamenco guiatrist Tom Metcalfe.
