SpaceUp at Rise Manchester
This weekend sees SpaceUp – a festival-cum-conference about space and the space industry – comes to Manchester. Featuring talks, presentations, discussion groups, craft sessions and a VR suite, it’s designed to get people engaged and talking about space exploration. One highlight is a Hackathon competition, the prize for which is having your hack shot into the great vacuum itself. It runs across two days, and you have to register for each day through Eventbrite to guarantee yourself a place.

Manchester Poetry and Fiction Prize Gala at Chethams Library
Now in eighth year, the Manchester Poetry and Fiction Prize has risen to become one of the most important events in the city’s literary calendar. Created by poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, the prize gifts a £10,000 to two new, unpublished talents. This gala evening allows to be one of the first to see the winners, and hear readings from some of the shortlisted writers. You’ll also be able to take advantage of the drinks reception beforehand.

Daydreaming In The City at HOME (pictured)
Daydreaming In The City is a one day micro-festival at HOME that explores daydreaming through film, theatre, spoken word and soundscape. It’s organised by live poetry producer, Poet in the City in collaboration with social scientists, artists, researchers and mental health experts from medical research charity the Wellcome Trust. The afternoon does feature some paid, ticketed events from 4pm: A screening of Jean Cocteau’s Orpheé preceded by an In The Dark listening event, and mixed media theatre show The City Unfurled – but the talks and readings earlier in the day are all free to sign up for.
